From 1899, he worked for Waring & Gillow as a draughtsman, before opening his own architecture and design agency in 1919. In 1925, he opened a boutique in the heart of Paris, on rue du Cherche-Midi, to sell his work as well as that of other designers. He collaborated with Marcel l'Herbier and Jean Lurçat on certain pieces of furniture.
Dr. Dalsace was one of his most loyal clients, and he created the Maison de verre for him, conceived as a space in its own right forming a whole.
In 1940, Chareau left for the United States, having received a large commission from Robert Motherwell for the total decoration of his house. He completed another villa in Spring Valley at the end of his career.
