Style and technique by Alice Colonieu
Alice Colonieu is part of the nouvelle modernité movement. She produces a variety of ceramic works, including flat paintings on ceramic, vases, pitchers, mirrors and other objects.
Alice Colonieu, ceramist of the Nouvelle Modernité
Alice Colonieu (1924-2010), French ceramist, produced unique, elegant and original ceramic works. She was born in Marseille, to a family from the Vaucluse.
She studied at the Marseille School of Fine Arts during the war, then at a ceramics school to specialize in this field. She settled near Orange and created various ceramics without using molds, notably with the colombin.
She paints her ceramics with bright colors, which give them a unique vitality and energy. She exhibited her work at the Salon des Arts Décoratifs and became a member of the fédération des métiers d'art. In the 60s, she benefited from the "1% artistique" scheme, which enabled her to finance some of her works. After collaborating with decorators such as Jules Leleu and Jean Royère, she decided to cease ceramics production in the mid-60s due to growing tourism, to the detriment of the artistic creation of local ceramists and other artists. She agreed to honor only certain specific commissions.
A solo exhibition was dedicated to her in 1992.
She died in Roaix in 2010, aged 85.
