Jean Lambert-Rucki is one of the leading members of cubist sculpture. He has also produced drawings and a few paintings. His work focuses mainly on the use of bronze, marble and terracotta, but also on painting, particularly with lacquer, which is relatively rare among cubists.
The career of Jean Lambert-Rucki
Jean Lambert-Rucki was born in Krakow in 1888. He began his training at that city's School of Fine Arts, where he met the painter Moïse Kisling, belonging to the Paris School. Panckiewicz was his teacher, teaching him Impressionism as well as the legacy of the Nabis, having rubbed shoulders with Pierre Bonard and Édouard Vuillard in France.
He was not influenced by Cubism at the start of his career, only discovering it in 1909 at an exhibition in Munich, where Picasso's works were notably on show.
Influenced at the same time by African primitive art, his work became a cross between cubism and primitive art.
After visiting a Gauguin exhibition in Krakow, he decided to settle permanently in France. He trained at the Académie Colarossi and lived at La Ruche, where he rubbed shoulders with Soutine, Chagall, Cendars and Fernand Léger - among others.
During the First World War, sent to the front, he met Joseph Czaky, a Cubist sculptor who was to influence his work, and vice versa.
After collaborating with Jean Dunand, he produced some Surrealist works in the 1930s and became interested in the Art Deco movement.
He died in Paris in 1967, aged 78.
