An artist who was active mainly in Paris during the 20th century, Charles Lacoste is close to Impressionism. He mainly depicts landscape scenes, with a particular focus on the sky and the representation of light.
He worked little with prints, producing more drawings and oils on canvas.
The life of Charles Lacoste
Charles Lacoste (1870-1959) was a French Impressionist painter.
Born in south-western France, he befriended Gabriel Frizeau in high school, who collected paintings by Odilon Redon. This sparked his interest in painting. André Gide, Arthur Fontaine and Henri Duprac gave him advice.
He had a very melancholy nature, which influenced his work. He was a regular visitor to London and the Salon des Cent.
Subsequently, he was one of the founding members of the Salon d'Automne. At the same time, he exhibited in Moscow and Brussels.
He gradually moved away from Impressionism, preferring dream-like subjects.
He died in Paris at the age of 88.
Charles Lacoste's mark on his period
Charles Lacoste made a lasting mark on his period on a regional scale, but was not extremely well known during his lifetime. However, some collectors appreciate his work, and the majority of his canvases are in private hands. He has a rising value on today's auction market.
