Born in Paris, he spent his childhood in Algeria with his parents. His parents died at an early age, leading him to return to Paris to live with his siblings at his uncle's.

After high school, he entered the Académie Julian, where he studied under Jules Lefebvre. Interested in medicine, he attended dissections at the University of Paris, which opened up an important field of expertise in his work as a sculptor. He then attended the Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he studied in Barrias' studio. At the end of his training, he was awarded the Prix de Rome and spent four years at the Villa Médicis.
