Élisée Maclet was born in the Somme region of France in 1881.
Coming from a modest background, his father initially rejected his aspirations to become a painter and pushed him to become a gardener, turning down the offer of Puvis de Chavannes who wanted to train Maclet in painting as a child.
He moved to Paris in 1906, where he became a decorator for the Moulin Rouge, while continuing to paint. His representations of the Montmartre district were not as impressionistic as those of his colleagues. He prefers techniques derived from pointillism and cubism. He employs several techniques, including the brush and the knife.
He soon makes contacts with dealers, enabling him to make a living from his production. In Montmartre, he concentrated on colorimetry and purity of color.
The end of his career was complicated, marked by an economic crisis, internment at Sainte-Anne and then the Second World War.
