Sophie Taeuber-Arp, surrealism between rhythm and geometry

Sophie Henriette Gertrude Tauber, known as Sophie Taeuber-Arp, was born in Davos, Switzerland. She studied applied arts in Munich, St. Gallen and Hamburg, then took dance classes and became a choreographer alongside her career as an artist. In 1915, she met Jean Arp in Zurich, who was to become her husband, and took part with him in the emulation of the Dada movement.

She became a teacher at the Zurich School of Applied Arts, and danced in cabarets under a false name, her choreography being deemed strange and inconsistent with the school's principles. It was during these years that she created her series of sculpted heads, which were to become her most famous works.

She married Jean Arp in 1921, and in the process had a house and artist's studio built together in Clamart.

In 1926, they also tried their hand at decoration with Theo van Doesburg.

Her work evolved over the course of her career, and she gradually turned towards more abstraction, taking part in the abstraction-creation movement and founding the magazine Plastique.

In 1940, she had to leave Paris with her husband because of the Occupation, and took refuge in Grasse with other artists such as Sonia Delaunay.

She died in 1943, aged 53, at the home of her friend Max Bill.
