The artist's works and style
An artist who was active in Paris during the 20th century, Henri Hélis is a French Impressionist painter. His paintings are mostly landscape scenes, representing reality fairly faithfully, yet using broad flat tints of paint as well as pastel shades.
Henri Hélis or the Impressionist work of light
Henri Hélis (1872-1945) was a French Impressionist painter born in Romorantin.
He learned painting techniques from Ovide Scribe in Romorantin, and took part in the International White and Black Exhibition in 1890. The following year, Hélis was appointed secretary of the Société des artistes indépendants. He settles permanently in Paris and continues his training at the École Nationale des Arts Décoratifs, where he learns charcoal technique from Auguste Allongé.
He then joins the Société des Artistes Indépendants as a member. This gave him the opportunity to exhibit his works, which include many Impressionist landscapes created using a variety of working methods : pastel, charcoal, oil on cardboard and oil on canvas. Whatever the medium used, Hélis took great care in the composition of his landscapes as well as in his depiction of light.
Along with Cézanne and Jourdain, he was one of the founding members of the Salon d'Automne in 1903, where he would also have the opportunity to exhibit his works.
Henri Hélis died in Paris in 1945, aged 72.
Henri Hélis's imprint on his period
Henri Hélis did not make a lasting mark on his period on a national scale, and was not very well known during his lifetime, compared with Cézanne who worked with him, for example. However, some collectors appreciated his work, and the majority of his paintings are kept in private homes.
