The artist's works and style

Initially influenced by the Fauvist, Cubist and Post-Impressionist movements, Moise Kisling's early works were innovative.

In the 1920s, the artist developed a more realistic style and explored themes such as portraits, nudes and landscapes. Often characterized by warm colors and expressive strokes, Kisling's compositions are very lively.

The life of Moïse Kisling

Moïse Kisling (1891-1953) was born in Krakow, Poland.

Determined to become a painter and attracted by the artistic opportunities Paris represented, he moved there in 1910. Kisling exhibited for the first time at the Salon d'Automne in 1912 and became friends with many artists of his time. During the Second World War, he enlisted in the Foreign Legion and obtained French nationality twelve years later.

Gifted at creating links between different artists, his studio on rue Joseph-Bara became a veritable meeting place for Parisian artists and intellectuals, frequented in particular by Max Jacob, Jean Cocteau and Pierre Reverdy.

During the Occupation, he was forced to leave France because of his origins. He continued to paint, however, and even exhibited in Los Angeles in 1942. He returned to France four years later, having slightly modified his style: he favored the use of pure tones and made his compositions more complex. He reaffirmed his place on the French art scene with an exhibition at Galerie Drouant-David in 1951, shortly before his death.
