Henri Bouchard, his life, his work

Henri Bouchard (1875-1960), a French artist, became an important figure in 19th-century sculpture.

Born in Dijon, he was the son of a carpenter who predisposed him to turn to decoration. He completed an apprenticeship with an ornamental decorator.

At the same time, he took courses at the École des Beaux-Arts in Dijon, then later at the Académie Julian and the École supérieure des Arts décoratifs. Finally, at the Beaux-Arts de Paris, he studied in the studio of Louis Ernest Barrias. In 1901, he won the Grand Prix de Rome for a sculpture inspired by ancient mythology, which opened the doors to the Villa Médicis. He then spent two years traveling in Europe and North Africa, which influenced his work and placed popular themes at the heart of his inspiration.

Returning to Paris, he worked with Jules Dalou and was appointed professor at the Académie Julian. He exhibited his work in a number of venues and became president of the Salon des Artistes français.
