Eugène Damas mainly produces oils on canvas depicting country landscapes, which are his main inspiration. He was influenced by the realism of Jean-François Millet, depicting above all nature.
The life of Eugène Damas
Eugène Damas (1844-1899) was a French painter born in the Ardennes.
He studied at the Académie de peinture et de sculpture in Valenciennes, then at the Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he studied under Alexandre Cabanel.
He then returned to live in the Ardennes, where he became a teacher. Strongly inlfuenced by the work of Jean-François Millet, his first exhibition at the Salon des artistes français established this stylistic kinship.
He founded an association with sculptor Alphonse Colle in his native region.
He took on several commissions to decorate churches, producing copies after Rubens and Murillo for the purpose.
He died in Charleville at the age of 55.
