Style and technique of the house of Cardeilhac
The house of Cardeilhac goldsmiths, a family dynasty bearing the surnames of the various goldsmiths who succeeded each other after the house was founded, produces mainly services. The taste of the pieces varies according to the period, but is often stylistically close to the house of Christofle.
The history of the House of Cardeilhac
Born in Paris in 1804, the House of Cardeilhac was founded by Antoine-Vital Cardeilhac on rue du Roule, in the 8th arrondissement of Paris.
He produced for around ten years - and on the strength of the success of his goldsmith's pieces, registered his first hallmark in 1817, and others in the years that followed.
From 1851, his son Armand Edouard Cardeilhac took over the management of the company, followed by his grandson Ernest in 1885, who developed the company with the beginning of the use of precious metals, namely gold (and silver). His mother supported him and opened a new boutique on the Place Vendôme, which confirmed their recognition and success in the goldsmith's market.
In 1920, the founder's two great-grandchildren ran the company until Christofle and Cardeilhac reached an agreement to merge.
House Cardeilhac's imprint on its era
House Cardeilhac left an important artistic legacy, testifying to the permanent artistic renewal of the early 20th century, considered at the beginning of this period to be a rising star in goldsmithing. Her works are on display in many prestigious art collections around the world, although she is relatively unknown to the general public.
Today, these works are still successful at auction. Although some are preserved in museums in Europe, private collectors play a major role in the preservation of her work, especially where jewelry is concerned.
Recognizing the goldsmith's hallmark
The goldsmith's hallmark of the Cardeilhac house is easy enough to recognize, it consists of a crowned Legion of Honor cross, placed above a crescent. However, this hallmark can be counterfeited, which is why expertise is important.
