Anthony II Claesz or Anthony Claesz the Younger (1616-1652) was a 17th-century Dutch painter.
Born in Amsterdam, he worked there and was a pupil of Balthasar van der Ats, traveling between Paris and London. His work is essentially devoted to the still life of flowers. Filled with metaphors on time, birth, life and death, these compositions would have a considerable impact on art history - being echoed in the 20th century by Vincent van Gogh in particular.
One of his paintings was presented for sale in October 2023 by Auctie's, depicting a bouquet of tulips made ten years after the collapse of bulb speculation (February 1637). This places him in the era of his time, tulips being particularly popular and cultivated flowers in the Netherlands.
