Victor Dupré is a painter associated with the Fontainebleau School, a group of painters active in 19th-century France who produced landscape paintings. Victor Dupré followed in the footsteps of his brother Jules, whom he had as a master.
Victor Dupré, forgotten painter of the 19th century
Victor Léon Dupré (1811-1889), was a French painter who produced landscape paintings and belonged to the Fontainebleau school. He was born in Limoges, and trained as a painter by his brother, Jules Dupré.
In 1839, he presented his first works at the Salon. He exhibited there until 1878.
Victor Dupré produced landscape paintings inspired by Normandy, Berry, Limousin, and the Île de France - notably the forest of Fontainebleau.
Jules and Victor Dupré settled first in Argenton-sur-Creuse, then in Fontainebleau, while working in his studio in the 9th arrondissement of Paris, rue de Rochechouart.
He died in Paris at the age of 63.
Victor Dupré's imprint on his time
Victor Dupré succeeded in creating a unique painting style reflecting the energy of his time, and made unrestrained use of contrasts of form and color, the keystone of his artistic style and a hallmark of the Fontainebleau school.
He was a fairly well-recognized marine painter during his lifetime, forgotten today but still of great interest to collectors.
