Théodore Gechter was an early 19th-century artist who produced various sculptures as part of the neoclassical movement. His work is closely linked to war, military figures and animal representations.

Jean François Théodore Gechter, his life, his work

Jean François Théodore Gechter (1795-1844), a French artist, became an important figure in 19th-century sculpture.

Born in Paris, he quickly turned to sculpture, becoming a pupil of sculptor François Joseph Bosio and painter Jean Antoine Gros.

He succeeded in exhibiting at the Salon from 1824, and for many years. The sculptor turned to war and military subjects after a ministerial commission to depict the battle of Charles Martel. He subsequently produced numerous subjects linked to the First Empire, such as the Battle of Aboukir.

The artist specialized in working with small bronze subjects, paying particular attention to the clothing of the individuals depicted. His works are sold throughout Europe.
