Style and technique of artist Emmanuel Frémiet

Emmanuel Frémiet succeeds in reviving the mastery of sculpture techniques : bronze, ceramics, in order to produce a large number of animal bronzes, which constitute the major part of his work.

Emmanuel Frémiet, his life, his work

Emmanuel Frémiet (1824-1910), a French artist, became an important figure in 19th-century sculpture.

He came from a family of artists, including Sophie Rude - a painter, who taught him drawing. He then attended drawing classes at the rue de l'École de Médecine, winning the prize for animal drawings. He began his career as a scientific lithographer, making anatomical casts at the morgue. He exhibited at the Salon, and some of his works were acquired by the State for the Musée du Luxembourg.

Recruited by Emperor Napoleon III, he was commissioned to produce works on military subjects. His most famous work, Gorille en enlevé une femme (Gorilla abducting a woman), was inspired by a news item in a newspaper. Later, he produced similar works inspired by Wallace's stories.

He also sculpted the equestrian statue of Joan of Arc on the Place des Pyramides in Paris.

He was elected a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts de Paris in 1892, replacing Antoine-Louis Barye, also an animal sculptor. Many of his statues were mass-produced by the firm of Ferdinand Barbedienne.

The artist died in 1910, aged 85.

Emmanuel Frémiet's imprint on his period

Some of Frémiet's works can be seen scattered around various towns in France, but relatively few: the bulk of his output is in private collections. He leaves a considerable legacy in the history of 19th-century art and sculpture.
