Reasons to sell a gold watch

If you own a gold watch and don't know how to sell it, auctions are one solution. Indeed, collectors use this method to find models that jewelry houses no longer offer for sale or that are very rare in boutiques. Prices can thus reach unprecedented amounts, and more consequent than those offered by the jewelry houses when they offer their new watches.

History of the gusset watch

Gusset watches are in vogue on the auction market and with collectors. A look back at the history of a jewel in its own right.

They take their name from the pocket on old vests, then known as a gousset. These watches were designed to be kept in this pocket. A chain was soon added to make them easier to use. Until the early 20th century, these were the watches most commonly used by men, with models with bracelets reserved for women. There are two types of gusset watches: open watches and hunter watches. The former is intended for everyday use, and is in fact mostly worn with a suit. The second has the advantage of being more solid, since it has a cover to protect the dial.

History of the wristwatch

The first wristwatch appeared in 1571, after the gousset watch. It was the Earl of Leicester who gave a watch with a matching bracelet to Queen Elizabeth I. However, it wasn't until the 19th century that it was standardized for women. Empress Josephine took part in this trend in France, ordering wristwatches from Nitot. In the other branch of the Bonaparte clan, the Queen Consort of Naples, Caroline Bonaparte, ordered a wristwatch from Breguet. They quickly set a trend that would become much more than that, establishing itself in women's fashion. Other jewelry houses began designing wristwatch models, and women all over Europe quickly adopted them. The first serial productions began at the end of the century.

For men, it was not until the beginning of the 20th century and Louis Cartier. The jeweler created a wristwatch for his aviator friend, who could see the time while flying. The Cartier watch for men soon became popular, first in the aviation sector and then on a wider scale. It was originally designed to tell the time, but a number of craftsmen contributed to the watch complications, giving them other functionalities.
