Charlotte Perriand, fashionable 20th-century designer

Charlotte Perriand was born in Paris on October 24, 1903. She found her vocation in childhood.

From 1920 to 1925, the artist studied at the Union centrale des arts décoratifs school. Two years later, she became an interior designer and opened her own studio on Place Saint-Sulpice in Paris.

Her interest in interior furnishings led her to collaborate with Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret in the 20s and 30s, working on major projects such as the Villa Church, the Villa Savoye, the Cité du Refuge de l'Armée du Salut and the Pavillon Suisse at the Cité Universitaire.

Charlotte Perriand also worked with Fernand Léger and Pierre Jeanneret on the theme of art brut and focused on photographing objects found in nature.

She later specialized in prefabricated architecture for leisure. In 1940, she was appointed advisor on industrial art by the Japanese government. The artist then moved to Tokyo for 6 years, where she learned the beauty of the useful, the power of emptiness and the mastery of space. Fascinated by Japanese culture, she returned to France changed and inspired.

On her return to her native country, the galerie Steph Simon (located at 145, Boulevard Saint-Germain in Paris) markets some of her furniture made with Jean Prouvé as well as furniture by Jean Prouvé himself.

Her daughter will curate the 2019 exhibition at the Fondation Louis Vuitton.

Charlotte Perriand died in 1999, a year after writing her memoirs.

The success of the Berger and Méribel stools at auction

The Berger and Méribel stools are a fervent success on today's auction market. They are highly prized by contemporary furniture enthusiasts and collectors.

This piece of furniture perfectly embodies the artist's essence and simplicity. This piece of furniture was born when she was working on the design for the Le Doron hotel in Méribel. It was inspired by a milking seat spotted on a farm during a walk in the mountains. It was initially designed with a black seat, in two models  the Méribel, which is the high version, and the berger, which is the low version.

She revised her model several times, so it's possible to find different models on the auction market. It was revisited in 1953 and 1961, when she took over the base. Different versions were produced in different woods, notably by Steph Simon. Today, Cassina still publishes Charlotte Perriand's Berger stools.
