Style and technique by artist Ker-Xavier Roussel

Roussel is a member of the Nabis group, which brought together postimpressionist painters of the very late 19th and early 20th centuries. It was a precursor group in which attributes of Fauvism can be discerned.

The life of Ker-Xavier Roussel

Ker-Xavier Roussel (1867-1944) was a 20th-century French painter, renowned for his Postimpressionist and Fauvist works. He was born near Metz, but the defeat by Prussia soon led his family to move. He lived with his father and brother in Paris. He attended the Lycée Condorcet, where he met Édouard Vuillard, who became his friend and brother-in-law. It was at the same school that he also met Maurice Denis, a painter who was to follow in his footsteps.

The Nabi group was formed at the Académie Julian, and Roussel was part of it from the start. Together with Paul Sérusier, the group's leader, he created sets for the Théâtre de l'œuvre. He then exhibited his paintings at the Salon des artistes indépendants and the Libre Esthétique in Brussels. He travels with Maurice Denis to the Côte d'Azur to visit Paul Signac and Paul Cézanne. He didn't stop painting scenery, however, and participated in worksites until the end of his career, notably with Vuillard.

He died at his home at the age of 76, probably of natural causes.

Ker-Xavier Roussel's imprint on his period

The artist is not very well known to the general public today, other artists such as Paul Sérusier have stood out more. However, he contributed to the formation and evolution of the Nabis group.

He remains a prized artist at auction among Nabis enthusiasts and collectors.
