Robert Filliou uses a variety of materials in his sculptures, notably wood, as well as other materials or objects from industry. He is close to the Fluxus movement, which combines painting, poetry and literature. The style of his work evolves throughout his career.
Robert Filliou's career
Robert Filliou is a French artist born in 1926 in the Gard region of France.
He studied in Alès and at the same time took part in Resistance activities as a high-school student. In 1946, he left for Los Angeles to join his father, whom he had never met. While working for Coca Cola, he earned a degree in political economy from the University of California. Interested in Gandhi's pacifist works, he decides to go on a mission to Japan and takes part in a UN program for the development of South Korea. He then travels to Egypt and Spain.
After all these travels and discoveries, Robert Filliou describes himself as an " artist poet ", believing that the semantics and meaning of words are the artist's primary material. He exhibits his pastel poems on a variety of media.
He opens his " non-boutique " in Villefranche-sur-Mer, conceived as an international center for permanent creation. He exhibits in many different countries, and takes part in the meeting that takes place between Joseph Beuys and the Dalai Lama.
Filliou spends the end of his career and life in the Dordogne, near a Tibetan sanctuary. His last artistic project took place on the day of his death, the date on which he had planned to send out cards inscribed with his last poem, which read "As it is very likely that we will croak, we will realize that it was a life, simply at the moment we croak. End of life. End of the poem."
