The life of Pierre Eugène Montezin

Pierre Eugène Montezin (1874 - 1946), was a 20th-century French painter.

He was born into a well-to-do family, his father drawing and creating lace. He grew up in Paris but often moved away to spend time in the countryside, two factors that predestined him to produce Post-Impressionist works. His father placed him in an apprenticeship in a decorating firm, and he was soon able to produce flower panels, a specialty of Gaston Suisse. At the same time, he produced oil paintings and eventually gave up decorating for good, in order to devote himself to landscape painting, which fascinated him more. In 1893, the painter wished to enter the Salon des artistes français to exhibit his work. For ten years, the Salon refused all the paintings he sent. Eventually, after ten years of painting the Paris region, he was accepted.

In 1914, he enlisted on the front line and was awarded a military medal after fighting in the Meuse. After this break in his career, he settled with his family between Neuilly sur Seine and Verneux les Sablons, where he could draw inspiration from natural landscapes.

Eventually, he was unanimously elected a member of the jury of the Salon des artistes français. He exhibited in several galleries at the end of his career and was elected to the Académie des Beaux-Arts, replacing Nabi painter Édouard Vuillard.

Montezin died in Brittany at the age of 71, painting.
