The life of Leopold Survage
Born in Moscow in 1879, Leopold Survage entered the Academy of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg before moving to Paris in 1908.
Influenced by Matisse, Survage took classes with the Fauvist leader and met his friend Archipenko. In 1912, he presented his creations alongside the Cubists at the Salon des Indépendants. He held his first solo exhibition at Galerie Bongard, organized by Guillaume Apollinaire, in 1917.
Survage was influenced by the artistic currents of his time, notably Fauvism and Cubism. The artist developed a personal style by combining the abstract geometry of cubism with vivid, expressive colors. His bold use of color earned him the reputation as one of the first abstract artists of his time.
Over the course of his career, Léopold Survage explored various forms of artistic expression, including painting, sculpture, printmaking and experimental filmmaking. He was also involved in the creation of sets and costumes for Russian ballet.
Léopold Survage died in 1968, a few years after receiving French naturalization and the Légion d'Honneur.
