Iba N Diaye is a painter from the Dakar school who produces modernist works. Only drawings and oils on canvas can be found on the auction market.

Iba N Diaye, major figure of the Dakar School

Iba N Diaye (1928 - 2008) is a modernist artist of the 20th century. He was born in Saint Louis, Senegal, where he attended secondary school. There, he began painting cinema posters.

In 1948, he moved to Paris, where he began studying architecture at the École des Beaux-Arts, while also taking an interest in jazz. The sculptor Zadkine introduced him to traditional African sculpture. He returned to his native country in 1959, just after independence was proclaimed. He took part in the creation of the Senegal School of Fine Arts. He held his first solo exhibition there and taught for 7 years.

At the end of this period, he returned to Paris and painted in his studio at La Ruche, notably the series of 18 canvases on the ritual sacrifice of the sheep. These were exhibited in 1970 at the Sarlat festival and at the Maison de la Culture in Amiens. In 1981, he travelled to New York to exhibit his work. He went on to exhibit in the Netherlands and Senegal, where he inaugurated a solo show in 2000.

He died in Clamart at the age of 80.
