The life of Henri Le Sidaner

Henri le Sidaner was born in Mauritius in 1862. Ten years later, his father, a captain in the navy, was transferred to Dunkirk. Encouraged by his mother, young Henri soon developed a passion for art and painting. In 1880, Le Sidaner was admitted to the École nationale des Beaux-arts in Paris and entered Alexandre Cabanel's studio as an apprentice.

Not enjoying his studies, Henri Le Sidaner decided to settle in Etaples, near Le Touquet. Representing mainly post-impressionist landscapes, the artist became one of the leaders of this movement, often referred to as the "Etaples school of painters" or the "Etaples artistic colony". In 1887, Le Sidaner exhibited for the first time at the Salon des artistes français.

In 1894, Henri Le Sidaner returned to live in Paris. His style evolves and moves more towards symbolism. He also showed an interest in night landscapes, offering an opportunity to explore the play of light. During this period, Le Sidaner frequented other Symbolist artists and intellectuals, and exhibited in several major galleries. He returned to postimpressionism a few years later and developed an intimate, poetic style combining symbolism and impressionism.

In the 1900s, Henri Le Sidaner bought a house in Gerberoy, in the Oise region. Like Giverny for Claude Monet, this house, with its colorful gardens, would become a true source of inspiration for the artist.

Henri Le Sidaner died of a heart attack in 1939, leaving behind him a major mark on the history of the Post-Impressionist movement.
