Artist's style and technique
Kostia Terechkovich's art can be described as "poetic realism". His detailed, luminous painting magnifies every aspect of existence, revealing the beauty and meaning hidden in ordinary aspects of life. His light palette and light touch create a delicate atmosphere. Her work evokes emotions and offers an artistic perspective imbued with sensitivity, capturing reality in a poetic way.
Kostia Terechkovitch's subjects are quite intimate. He says he finds his inspiration from those closest to him. In addition to his particular interest in dancers, which he paints as a filiation to the work of Degas, he also depicts landscape scenes. He also drew inspiration from equestrian events, depicting horses and horse races in his works.
The life of Constantin Terechkovitch
Kostia Terechkovitch, known as Constantin Terechkovitch, was born in Moscow in 1902. His interest in drawing was precocious. Encouraged by his parents, his apprenticeship was entrusted to the Moscow painter Constantin Youone and the famous collector Sergei Shchukin (see presentation of his collection at the Louis Vuitton Foundation, Icons of Modern Art, 2016-2017) ; before entering the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture.
In 1917, the Bolshevik revolution broke out and the country slowly drifted towards communism. Wanting to seize this opportunity and taking advantage of his country's chaotic context, Terechkovitch decides to leave for Paris, the capital of the arts. After various hardships, the young painter arrived in Paris in 1920.
Terechkovitch joined the expatriate Russian community in Montparnasse. He made the acquaintance of Larionov and his wife Natalia Goncharova and befriended other painters of the period, such as Soutine, Kisling, Kremegne and Lanskoy.
Despite a difficult start, his career took off in 1921 thanks to writer and art critic Serge Romoff. A few years later, he joined the Russian artistic diaspora in Berlin.
In 1933, he was called by the Monte-Carlo theater to work on sets and costumes for the Ballets Russes. That same year, he married and his wife Yvette became his muse. In 1939, he enlisted in the Foreign Legion. During the German Occupation, he took refuge with his family in d'Avallon and Saint-Tropez. This period enabled him to refocus on painting.
After the war, Terechkovitch settled in Paris, where he exhibited regularly. He also lived in Menton. Despite the craze for gestural abstraction, he remains faithful to serene realism. His paintings magnify every detail of life with clarity and lightness. He is considered a "painter of poetic reality". His success grew, and he traveled widely to add new subjects to his repertoire.
He died in 1978, while a retrospective exhibition was dedicated to him at the Musée Municipal de Menton a few years later.
