A major artist of the Paris School, Pavel Tchelitchev made his mark on the art market as early as the 1950s. Since then, his price has risen steadily, establishing the artist as a market leader. In 2016, his oil on canvas The Concert, dating from 1933, sold for €1,371,720.

Tchelitchev developed a distinctive style characterized by geometric compositions and the use of bright, contrasting colors. He also sought out transparency effects, adding visual depth to his creations.

Poliakoff's work is often described as poetic and expressive. His creations evoke an inner energy and capture emotion through the skilful use of color and form. His unique style has helped position him as one of the major artists of Russian surrealism.

Pavel Tchelitchev, a major figure of Russian surrealism

Pavel Tchelitchev, an American-Russian artist, was born in Dubrovka in 1898. A member of the Russian aristocracy, his various tutors of different nationalities introduced him to different art forms and currents at an early age. Forced to flee the Communist regime, he took refuge with his family in Kiev and studied drawing with Alexandra Exter. He then moved to Odessa and Berlin, during which time he created ballet and theater sets.

He arrived in Paris in 1923 and exhibited at the Salon d'Automne in 1925, where Gertrude Stein was won over by his work, and bought his entire studio. He became close to the painter René Crevel, also a Surrealist.

In 1930, he presented his work in a group show at the MOMA.

In 1934, he moved to New York with his partner, and continued to work for directors and choreographers. At the end of his career, he produced drawings for the press.

He died in Rome during a trip in 1957.
