Saint Saëns is a 20th-century painter who worked with a variety of media. His output is quite substantial, but he is most famous for producing tapestry cartoons, most of which were woven in Aubusson.

Marc Léon Saint Saëns (1903 - 1979), was a French cartonnier painter born in Toulouse.

He was born into a merchant family close to artistic circles, being the nephew of Camille Saint Saëns. During his high school years, he was close to the poet Pierre Fraysinnet. In 1920, he enrolled at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Toulouse.

In 1925, he won an agent's medal with André Arbus. At the same time, he produced a set for the Société des Artistes Méridionaux, of which he became a member.

From 1930, he left for Madrid on a scholarship to take up residence at Casa Velasquez.

On his return to France, he met Jean Lurçat, who advised him to produce tapestry cartoons. These would prove to be the key to his success. Together with Jean Lurçat, he founded the Société des peintres cartonniers.

During the Second World War, he joined the French Communist Party. His actions remained very moderate, however, unlike those of his daughter, Isabelle de Saint Saëns, who launched the events of May 68 in Nanterre.

Saint Saëns also had a career as a professor at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs. The tapestry Le Bouquet was created in 1951, and is the artist's favorite work. At the end of his career, he signed the 121 manifesto denouncing the setbacks of the Algerian war.
