The style and works of Albert Marquet

As the central subject of his paintings, water is undeniably Marquet's favorite theme. Indeed, considered a great master in his representation, Albert Marquet depicts water in all its forms, from the banks of the Seine to the Mediterranean, from urban settings to the wildest landscapes. Water is synonymous with poetry and tranquility for the artist, a mineral element, dreamy, far removed from the human world.

In keeping with the fauvist movement, Albert Marquet's works are nevertheless distinguished by the use of a highly ethereal luminosity and soft, nuanced shades of color. Marquet succeeds in masterfully capturing the mood of the place and transcribing it onto his canvas.

The life of Albert Marquet

Albert Marquet was born in Bordeaux in 1875. Not at home in the school system, he prefers to paint and draw rather than study. Encouraged by his mother, Albert Marquet entered the École des Arts Décoratifs in Paris in 1890, where he befriended Henri Matisse. Graduating a few years later, the young artist joined the École des Beaux-Arts in the studio of Symbolist master Gustave Moreau.

In 1905, Albert Marquet exhibited for the first time at the Salon d'Automne alongside former students of Gustave Moreau's studio. The style of this newly-formed swarm stood out for its use of simplified forms and bright, flat colors. The artist held his first monographic exhibition two years later.

Albert Marquet traveled extensively throughout his career, drawing much inspiration for his art. While staying in the Maghreb, he depicted the lush, mineral landscapes in his canvases, spending every winter there for over 25 years. Seized by the light of Algeria, and considered a model painter in his mastery of aquatic reflections, Marquet produced a large number of compositions, notably illustrating the port of Algiers. Some similarities with works by Hokusai and Hiroshige can be detected.

After the war, Albert Marquet settled permanently in Algiers. He remained there until 1945, before returning to France, where he retired from the art scene until his death.

Marquet died in 1947.
