The works and style of André Hambourg
The artistic career of André Hambourg is marked by two periods: the ravages of wartime and his bohemian life in Honfleur. The paintings that reflect the artist's life on the Normandy coast are his best-known works. The vast majority are landscapes, in a style inherited from Impressionism both in its facture and its vivid colors.
In contrast, his wartime paintings fall into the elegiac register, with dark, sinister intonations, representing the misfortune and atrocity of war.
Largely known for his postimpressionist style and seascapes, André Hambourg's paintings accurately captured the shifting nuances of water, the reflections of the skies and the variations of sunlight on the sea. Highly balanced, his compositions are harmonious, imbued with equilibrium and tranquility.
The life of André Hambourg
André Hambourg (1909 - 1999) was a French artist born in Paris. His parents were pharmacists who emigrated from Russia to escape deportation.
He attended the Lycée Montaigne and then the Lycée Louis le Grand, where he was noticed for his drawing talents. He then learned oil painting in Germany before returning to France, where he was accepted at the Ecole Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs. He then joined Lucien Simon's studio at the Beaux-Arts de Paris. He then exhibited at the Salon d'Automne, the Salon des artistes indépendants and the Salon des Tuileries.
Hambourg then received a travel grant to Algeria. He also travels to Morocco and several African countries. He returned to France and Africa during the Second World War.
During his stay in Algeria, the artist came into contact with resistance fighters in Oran. Involved in the Resistance, André Hambourg collaborated with a number of newspapers and received government commissions to depict the daily life and trauma of war through his paintings.
A few years later, André Hambourg was appointed official painter to the French Navy. He therefore chose to settle in Honfleur and illustrated the daily life of the crews, the port, and Norman life.
Throughout his career, André Hambourg traveled extensively. Inspired by these many sojourns abroad, his palette as well as his artistic vision changed irrevocably, enabling him to capture the essence of the places he visited with panache.
André Hambourg's imprint on his period
In addition to his artistic practice and political commitment, André Hambourg shared his passion with many students as a teacher. Finally, he published several books on the painting of his time and participated in initiatives to promote the visual arts.
