Artist's style and technique
Demetre Chiparus is an artist belonging to the Art Deco movement, who mostly produced sculptures inspired by classical dancers - especially so-called " exotic ". Most of his sculptures are in bronze, but he also produced some in ceramic and chryselephantine.
The career of Demetre Chiparus
Demetre Chiparus (1886 - 1947), or Dimitri Chiparus, was a Franco-Romanian sculptor of the Art Deco period.
Born near the Ukrainian border in Romania, he studied drawing in Florence and then at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. In 1914, he exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français and was awarded an "honorable" medal. After the war, he set up his own studio and specialized in chryselephantine sculpture, a mixture of bronze and ivory, an ancient technique developed in 4th-century Greece. He paints his sculptures cold and uses marble and onyx bases.
Although a stylistic proximity to Edgar Degas, who also produced bronze sculptures of dancing girls, is apparent, the latter was not one of his masters , since Chiparus was trained by Raffaello Romanelli, Antonin Mercier and Jean Bouché.
The artist died in Paris in 1947.
