The life of Roger Mathias

Roger Mathias (1884-1971) was a landscape painter who produced impressionist and abstract works.

He trained at the École des Beaux-Arts de Bordeaux, with artists such as André Lhote.

There he studied the work of the Nabis painters, such as Édouard Vuillard, who exerted an influence on his work. He frequented the painter Émile Brunet, with whom influences crossed paths.

During his career, it is assumed that he exhibited his work only in Bordeaux and the surrounding area, so he was only known locally for his work.

In the '30s, we find fairly impressionistic productions that deviate little from reality and transcribe forms faithfully. In the '40s, contours became more blurred, colors more vivid. Finally, in the '60s, his canvases come close to analytical cubism. The shades he uses are darker, resembling Picasso's Portrait of Ambroise Vollard.

Roger Mathias's imprint on his era

Roger Mathias did not make a lasting mark on his era, being known only locally during his lifetime. However, the aesthetics of his works are highly appreciated at auction, and they are sought after by some collectors.

Not all of Roger Mathias's works are signed, which is why it's best to have them appraised.
