Style and technique of Mikhail Guermacheff

Mikhail Guermacheff belongs to the École de Paris group, like other artists (Michel Kikoine, Alessio Isupoff, Nicolas de Staël) who immigrated to Paris from Russia, although this term is far too broad to give a precise definition of his work. He fits in with the Russian realist artists, and produces mainly oils on canvas.

The life of Mikhail Guermacheff

Mikhail Markanovich Guermacheff, (1867 - 1930) was a Russian artist of the École de Paris.

The artist was born in Kharkoff, in the Russian Empire. He studied at the Moscow School of Fine Arts, where he trained in landscape painting and learned the techniques of the Russian realists. He took part in several Salons, including those in Moscow and St. Petersburg, where he exhibited his work. After the 1917 revolution, like many of his colleagues, he was forced to leave his native country.

He settled permanently in France, exhibiting canvases at the Grand Palais des Champs Élysées and the Salon de la Société nationale des Beaux-Arts.

His works are particularly characteristic of early Russian realism, depicting an enlightened, idealized country before the tragic revolutionary events of the 20th century. They convey a certain nostalgia for the last moments of the Russian Empire, very subtle in his most famous paintings depicting views of the Kremlin under the snow.

He died in Paris in 1930.
