Designer's style and technique

Clément Rousseau's neoclassical style was highly successful in the early 20th century. His work enjoyed a rapid and dazzling success, thanks to the elegant design of his furniture and his sense of aesthetics. He is particularly renowned for his mastery of shagreen.

Clément Rousseau, designer of antique styles

Clément Rousseau was born in Deux-Sèvres in 1872.

He first became interested in sculpture and drawing at the École des Beaux-Arts in Angers, but soon turned to furniture and interior design.

He soon distinguished himself from the other students and joined designer Jacques Doucet's studio in Paris as part of Pierre Legrain's team. His work was quickly noticed, and he became a sought-after artist. Like Paul Dupré-Lafon, he received prestigious commissions from the Duchesse de Vendôme and the Rothschild family.

Rousseau was successful not only for his style, which advocated a return to the classical styles of the 18th and 19th centuries, but also for his exceptional techniques and materials, including ebony and violet wood, which the greatest decorators had used before him (like Boulle, for example).

He also inlaid relatively precious elements in demand at the time into his creations, such as copper or ivory.

He died in 1950 in the Paris region.

The legacy of Clément Rousseau

Clément Rousseau left a notable legacy in the field of French design, with iconic pieces that are rare on the market and rarely found at auction, where records multiply. His work is characterized by great diversity and remarkable richness: pedestal tables, boxes, desks, lamps...  His creations are extremely popular in current interior design trends.
