Andy Warhol, central figure of Pop art

Andy Warhol, whose real name was Andrew Warhola, was an iconic American artist of the 20th century, born on August 6, 1928 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and died on February 22, 1987 in New York. He is best known as one of the central figures of the Pop art movement.

Warhol grew up in a family of Slovak immigrants in Pittsburgh and developed an early interest in art and popular culture. He studied fine art at Carnegie Mellon University before moving to New York in the 1950s. In New York, he quickly became part of the thriving art scene of the time, and became famous for works that highlighted celebrity, mass consumption and repetition. His works often take up the theme of money and question over-consumption. One of his most iconic works is the Campbell's Soup Cans series (1961), a series of paintings depicting Campbell's soup cans. Warhol also created portraits of celebrities, including Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley and Elizabeth Taylor, using silkscreen techniques that contributed to his notoriety.

Warhol was also a central figure in the New York party scene and frequented the famous Studio 54. There he was known for his eccentric personality and lifestyle. He also worked in other artistic fields, including music, collaborating with the rock band The Velvet Underground. His studio, known as "The Factory," was a meeting place for many of the artists, musicians, writers and celebrities of the time, helping to shape the popular culture of the 1960s and 1970s. He was Jean-Michel Basquiat's mentor, but also his colleague, as they created many works together, which were exhibited at the Fondation Louis Vuitton in 2023 in an exhibition devoted entirely to them. He also worked with Keith Haring.

Andy Warhol died at the age of 58 in New York following post-operative complications after routine surgery. His contribution to contemporary art continues to influence many artists, and his fame endures thanks to his iconic works that still captivate audiences worldwide.
