Nikolai Sapunov, twentieth-century Russian symbolist
Nikolai Nikolaevich Sapunov (1880 - 1912) was a Russian painter.
Born in Moscow, he studied at the Moscow School of Painting, Architecture and Sculpture under Isaac Levitan. He then continued his training at the Imperial Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg.
His first works were created for Moscow's Bolshoi Theatre, inspired by Constantin Korovine's drawings. Like many Russian artists, theater sets were a springboard for launching his career.
On a personal basis, without receiving commissions, the bulk of his production consists of still lifes of flowers.
