Style and technique of artist Le Thi Luu

Le Thi Luu is influenced by the styles of Victor Tardieu and Joseph Inguimberty. She has worked with a wide variety of techniques, from classic oils on canvas, drawings and prints to mastery of ink. Her ink drawings are her most emblematic and highly regarded works.

Le Thi Luu, painter in vogue

Le Thi Luu (1911-1988) was a renowned Vietnamese artist. She was born into a wealthy family in northern Vietnam, and trained at an early age at the École des Beaux-Arts d'Indochine, in Hanoi, where she learned painting from Victor Tardieu, co-founder of the school.

On completion of her studies, she decided to leave to pursue her career in Paris in the 1940s, where few Vietnamese artists, unlike artists from other countries, had settled. She didn't stay long, however, as she was forced to move to the south of France after the war. Taking advantage of this opportunity, she depicted the landscapes of Gentilly in her drawings and paintings, working extensively on the representation of light, drawing inspiration from the techniques of Pierre Bonnard and Auguste Renoir.

She then made a point of producing female portraits until the end of her career. She died in 1988.

Le Thi Luu's imprint on her period

Le Thi Luu marked her time with her artistic commitment. She also participated in the evolution and modernization of Vietnamese painting, passing on her know-how and skills to many other painters after her. Few of the artist's works are in circulation today on the art market, and many have disappeared, heightening collectors' interest when one of them comes up for auction.

Recognizing the artist's signature

The Thi Luu often signs his name at the bottom of his drawings, or oils on canvas. Copies may exist, so expertise remains important.
