Jamini Roy's career
Jamini Roy (1887-1972), was a modern abstract artist of the 20th century.
He was born in Bengal and graduated from Kolkata's Government School of Art, where he acquired a certain theoretical grounding but broke away from academic conventions in his early works. Early in his career, he painted portraits and landscapes, eventually finding his true artistic identity and inspiration in Bengali folklore. Oscillating between borrowing from and rejecting the history of British art, the artist produced a body of work quite apart from the rest, reflecting the historical tensions of the Commonwealth at the time. He developed a particular attachment to the technique of tempera on wood, which enabled him to be more in tune with traditional Indian art. He exhibited his work for the first time in Calcutta.

Jamini Roy left a significant mark on the history of twentieth-century art, and is one of his country's best-known painters. His considerable artistic output is the result of hard work and a long career. Jamini Roy is one of the highest-rated contemporary Indian artists on the art market today.
