Lucien Lévy-Dhurmer's style and technique
Lucien Lévy-Dhurmer finds his own style and learns from several artistic currents such as Academism and, more particularly, Symbolism, with its attraction to dreams, a certain mysticism and a form of melancholy, in reaction to naturalism. His style is also reminiscent of the Romanticism and Pre-Raphaelitism of the early 19th century, recalling the paintings of Dante Gabriel Rossetti and John Everett Millais. He paints women with a symbolic or even mythological character, in a vaporous style and being partisans of the " non finito ", the background against which the busty figures appear is relatively abstract or sketched.
The life of Lucien Lévy-Dhurmer
Born in Algiers in 1865, Lucien Lévy-Dhurmer began his artistic training in 1879 at the École communale supérieure de dessin et de sculpture in Paris. He quickly gained renown for his spectacular mastery of pastel and drawing, and worked at Clément Massier's Manufacture for 8 years. Some works are signed in collaboration by the two artists, and there is no vase attributed to Dhurmer alone.
Lucien Lévy-Dhurmer's imprint on his era
The artist's vases are much less famous than the rest of his work, but they are nevertheless quoted at auction. Thanks to his collaboration with Clément Massier, a sought-after ceramist on the auction market, these are original works that are very popular with buyers.
How to recognize Lucien Lévy-Dhurmer's signature
The artist didn't sign all his works, which doesn't make the work of expertise any easier, but his signature appears as a voluptuous, clearly visible idiogram in fluid script.
