The artist's works and style

Jean Le Mayeur is a 20th-century luminist painter, a term referring to a variety of often pointillist Belgian painters with Dutch influences.

He produced mainly oils on canvas, but also drawings.

The life of Jean Le Mayeur

Jean Le Mayeur (1880 - 1958) was born in Brussels. He was the son of Adrien Le Mayeur, also a painter.

He studied architecture and civil engineering at the Université Libre de Bruxelles. He then learned painting from his father and the painter Ernest-Blanc Garin. He travels to North Africa and Tunisia, then settles in Bali, where he uses Balinese dancers as models for his canvases.

He presents a first exhibition in Singapore, which meets with great success.

After Indonesian independence, the minister visited the home of Le Mayeur and one of his models, now his wife, and suggested that they turn it into a museum.

Following a bout with cancer, he had to return to Belgium for treatment. He died in Brussels two months after his arrival, leaving his wife to look after the Le Mayeur museum in Bali.

Jean Le Mayeur's imprint on his period

Jean Le Mayeur left his mark on his era through his consistent production and the particularity of his Balinese inspirations. Today, the artist's value continues to rise on the art market.

His works are highly prized, especially the oils on canvas.
