Style and technique by artist Adolphe Marie Beaufrère
Adolphe Marie Beaufrère was influenced by the Nabis group, a group of post-impressionist painters from the very late 19th and early 20th centuries. It was a precursor group in which attributes of Fauvism can be discerned. It also produced Orientalist works and many landscape scenes.
The career of Adolphe Marie Beaufrère
Adolphe Marie Beaufrère (1876-1960) was a 20th-century French painter, renowned for his postimpressionist and orientalist works.
Born in Finistère, he entered the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1897, where he studied under Gustave Moreau and Fernand Cormon. The following year, he exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français.
Initially inspired by his native Brittany, he produced many landscape paintings inspired by it early in his career.
In 1911, his production took an orientalist turn when he received a grant to travel to Algeria. He also traveled to Italy and Spain. The First World War slowed his output as he was drafted into the infantry, but would exert an influence on his work as Beaufrère illustrated Fôret Voisine by Maurice Genevoix, a writer who had transcribed some of the key moments of the Great War.
Illustration would play an important role at the end of his career.
He died in Brittany in 1960, aged 83.
