Style and technique by artist Pham Hau

Pham Hau is a Vietnamese master lacquerer who works with traditional Vietnamese lacquer techniques. He uses a variety of supports: screens, boxes, furniture and panels. He adds Western painting techniques to his compositions.

Pham Hau's life

Pham Hau was born in 1903 in a village in Vietnam.

Through his marriage, he met the painter Nam Son Nguyen, and enrolled at the École des Beaux-Arts d'Indochine. Joseph Inguimberty trained him in lacquer techniques, with which they mixed pine resin. This technique creates a new material after the application of successive layers, all sanded down, revealing new reflections.

He often depicts landscapes, but also animals and plant motifs. He works from Vietnamese oriental iconography, developing it by modernizing it.

His works have been exhibited twice in Vietnam and once in Toronto. Despite this, the Vietnamese lacquer panels and screens bear witness to a unique craftsmanship and are highly rated on the auction market.

The artist died in his hometown in 1995, aged 92.
