The life of Émile Claus
Émile Claus was born in Flanders, in Vive-Saint-Éloi, into a family of shopkeepers.
He decided early on to become a painter, and began his training at the Antwerp School of Fine Arts, exhibiting his first canvases in 1875. Early on, he worked on colorimetry issues.
He met the painter Theo Verstraerte, and the two artists influenced each other's work. His production is described as luminist from these pivotal years when he works not only on color, but also on light.
Later in his career, he links up with the Laethem group and works with the artists who are part of it.
He was also influenced by the Symbolist painter Henri Le Sidaner, with whom he also worked.
