Franz Bergmann succeeded in reviving the mastery of sculptural techniques in the Viennese tradition: bronze, gilded bronze, in order to produce a large number of animal bronzes, which constitute the major part of his work.

Franz Xavier Bergmann (1861-1936), an Austrian foundryman, became an important figure in 19th-century sculpture.

Born in Vienna, in the Austrian Empire, he inherited his father's foundry, opened a year before his birth. Franz Xavier was able to expand it, initially producing bronzes using models designed by his father.

Gradually, he took account of trends and renewed his team of sculptors to create pieces in the Art Nouveau movement.

He then developed the technique of cold painting, also known as dust painting.

The foundry's activity was interrupted during the Great Depression, and Franz Xavier's son reopened it for some time afterwards.

Some of Bergmann's works can be seen scattered around various cities in Europe, but relatively few: the bulk of his output is in private collections. He leaves a considerable legacy in the history of 19th-century art and sculpture.
