Ambroise Louis Garneray, his life, his work

Ambroise Louis Garneray (1783-1857) was an English sailor, writer and marine painter of the First Empire period.

He devoted himself to painting after 1814, close to the Emperor Napoleon I, he received commissions from him - which he didn't carry out until the 1830s.

He was then employed by the Duc d'Angoulême, Grand Admiral of France. Throughout his life, he produced numerous canvases depicting different warships, traveling to many French ports.

Not just a painter, he was also a precursor of the maritime adventure novel through his writings. Appointed director of the Musée de Rouen, he also joined the Manufacture de Sèvres.

At the start of the Second Empire, he was again approached by Napoleon III for a number of commissions.

Claude Joseph Vernet and Nicolas Ozanne were to exert a major influence on his work.

After dividing his life between his activities as a privateer, writer and painter, he died in Paris at the age of 74.

Louis Garneray's imprint on his period

Louis Garneray was a recognized and important marine painter in England. His career as a sailor enabled him to get as close as possible to the equipment available to the Royal Navy during the Napoleonic Wars, and in this sense his works constitute considerable historical testimony.

Some of his works are exhibited by the National Maritime Museum in London, but it is private collectors who play the greatest role in preserving his work.
