A look back at the history of Savage revolvers

The Savage Navy revolver was designed in 1860 by Edward Savage and Henri North, and produced in Connecticut for just one year. Production runs to 20,000 units. The revolvers ordered at the end were used by the Confederates, opposing the American federal government during the American Civil War, in certain cavalry divisions in Texas, Virginia and Missouri. It was officially used by several volunteer cavalry regiments and by the 7th New York Cavalry. The Marines also used this weapon, but little compared to more powerful ones like the Colt pistols. Within a few years, it became a sought-after collector's weapon.

In 1859, the Savage Figure Eight had been marketed with less success. Yet it was the same system  the gun is made with two triggers, it works in double action. The second trigger activates the first, rotating the cylinder and pricking the hammer. It's a percussion system, but not the simplest or most conventional.

The success of Savage revolvers

Savage revolvers are successful at auction because they are a collectible weapon in demand. With 20,000 produced, some have obviously been lost to history. Buyers are therefore willing to pay a high price in order to own one.
