Jean Chrysotsome Stumpff belongs to the Transition period, which enjoyed great success in the middle of the 18th century, between the Louis XV and Louis XVI eras. His work enjoyed a rapid and dazzling success, due to the elegance of his furniture design and his sense of aesthetics. He is particularly renowned for his mastery of rosewood marquetry.

Jean Chrysostome Stumpff, Transitional cabinetmaker

Jean Chrysotshome Stumpff (1731-1806), was a Swabian-born cabinetmaker from Schweigern, Germany. He was originally from Schweigern, Germany.

He obtained his master's degree in 1766, and opened a store on rue Saint Nicolas, as a free or privileged cabinetmaker.

The cabinetmaker used the techniques of rosewood veneer and lacquer from the Far East. He produced trompe-l'œil marquetry using a system of latticework, often inspired by an antique repertoire.

He rubbed shoulders with and probably worked with Queen Marie-Antoinette's cabinetmaker, Ferdinand Schwerdfeger.
