Style and technique of artist Arshile Gorky

Arshile Gorky mostly paints abstract compositions, he uses a lot of watercolor but also pencil. He mixed techniques and drew inspiration from political events in the United States, but also from his mother who died during the 1918 famine in Armenia.  

The life of Arshile Gorky

Arshile Gorky (1904 - 1948), Armenian artist, became an important figure in the 20th-century art world, highly prized at auction.

He was born near Lake Van, in the Ottoman Empire, and fled the Armenian genocide. He moves with his family to Everan, in Russian Armenia. His mother died of famine in the winter of 1918. In 1920, he joined his father in Boston and studied at the Rhode Island School of Design, near Providence. In 1925, he moved to New York to study at the Grand Central School of Art, where he became a professor. He followed the work of Cézanne and Picasso, and was inspired by Cézannean cubism and analytic cubism in his early works.

By 1930, he was gaining recognition.

He experienced the New Deal and received public commissions at this time, notably for Newark airport.

During the Second World War, he met André Breton, in exile in New York, who took notice of his work.

He had a very difficult end to his life and career  his wife left him, his studio was set on fire, as a result of which he lost part of his production, he was diagnosed with cancer late in life. He underwent surgery but never recovered, committing suicide in 1948 at the age of 44.

Arshile Gorky bequeaths an innovative body of work that will have advanced American and world art. His last works are influenced by the work of Kandinsky, with a rapprochement of color and sound. He probably did a lot of work on color complementarity.
