Mathurin Méheut was born in Lamballe in 1882 into a family of craftsmen. He started out as a house painter, before exploring drawing and entering the École des Beaux-Arts in Rennes and then Paris.
Mathurin Méheut made a name for himself as a decorative painter for various magazines and illustrated famous books. His passion for seascapes led him to create a major work entitled "Étude de la mer". He also explored image reproduction techniques. After the First World War, he turned his attention to earthenware, working with several renowned manufacturers. Mathurin Méheut left an undeniable mark on the visual arts and decoration.
Throughout his artistic career, Mathurin Méheut drew inspiration from his native Brittany. As an illustrator, decorator and through an abundance of written testimonials, he immortalized the marine fauna and flora, landscapes and inhabitants of the region.
