Style and technique of artist Claire Bertrand
Claire Bertrand is a French artist from the Académie Julian, who has notably produced works within the expressionist movement. She produced sculptures, drawings, prints as well as oils on canvas.
Claire Bertrand's career
Claire Bertrand (1890-1969) was a French artist of the early 20th century, born in Sèvres. Her mother was a talented pianist and her father a geologist. She acquired a pronounced artistic sensibility early in her childhood.
She trained as a painter at the Académie Julian and then the Académie de la Palette, as well as the studio of René Ménard and Julien Simon. She married painter Willy Eisenschitz, who was arrested in 1914 as an Austrian subject. She gave birth to their first child while they were both imprisoned. Once the war was over, she exhibited at the Salon des artistes indépendants and the Salon d'Autonme. Claire Bertrand moved several times with her husband to Provence, where they eventually settled. They often held joint exhibitions.
There are musical influences in her painting, especially in the nuances of color. Her husband and son were arrested in 1940 because of their origin, which necessarily had an impact on their artistic production. They moved to the Drôme, and survived the occupation. At the end of the war, they organized exhibitions in collaboration with their daughter.
Claire Bertrand's imprint on her period
Claire Bertrand made a significant contribution to art and culture, although she was not widely known to the general public. Her own artistic works reflect the influence of the artistic movements of her time, making her an important figure in twentieth-century art.
Recognizing the artist's signature
Claire Bertrand does not necessarily sign her works. Copies may exist, which is why expertise remains important.
