The life of Michel Kikoine

Michel Kikoine (1892 - 1968) was a Russian artist of the École de Paris.

He was born in Gomel in the Russian Empire, and took an early interest in painting. In 1905, he met the famous painter Chaïm Soutine in a studio, and studied with him at the Vilnius School of Fine Arts. A rising star of his time, during his Russian studies he also met Pinchus Krémègne, another promising Russian artist. Like many of them, he moved to Paris at the beginning of the 20th century, following the political turmoil in his country. As early as 1912, he frequented Fernand Cormon's studio, then moved two years later to the artists' housing estate of La Ruche, which many painters of the Paris School had frequented.

In 1919, he exhibited for the first time at the Galerie Chéron, and was directly noticed by the art critic Montlaur. With Soutine, he traveled around France, painting in Cagnes sur mer among other places. He eventually settled in Yonne. The two artists influenced each other, Kikoine also learning from and reusing Pierre Bonnard as well as some of the Fauvists ; without, however, returning the same extravagance.

During and after the Second World War, attached to his Jewish upbringing and influences, at the end of his career after trips to Israel he produced a series of color lithographs entitled Enfants d'Israël.

Michel Kikoine's imprint on his period

Michel Kikoine is not a painter widely known to the general public, either during his lifetime or today. His landscape paintings are, however, appreciated by collectors and have a certain success at auction. Some of his works are exhibited in museums in France, but private collectors play a major role in preserving his work.
